    Gorse Demonstration Day

    Posted on: 3 June 2019

The Portland Gorse Management Field Day was well attended and provided best practice management advice to Portland residents and agency staff. Just under 30 people registered for the event and turned up to check out the big machinery.

Local earth moving contractors Kylee and Goose Rogers demonstrated the capacity of their 20 tonne excavator. There machine mulched and reduced a large area of gorse; demonstrating the capacity, speed and efficiency of its application in the field. Mechanical mulching is of course only one part of a control program that delivers successful outcomes around managing gorse. Follow up treatments and vigilant monitoring evaluation and further treatments was the take home message from the VGT Expert Field Officer.

Gorse is a community problem and successful future programs will require a Gorse Control Committee to be set up. If you are interested in being part of the solution then we would encourage you to contact the SEA Chair; Lynn Murrell or Landcare Facilitator Kristy Brewer.
