Cobboboonee National Park Celebration & memorial to Doug Phillips

    Posted on: 2 December 2019

The 10 year celebration of our beloved Cobboboonee National park was a well attended and presented event. Congratulations to everyone who helped bring it all together.

Over seventy people turned up to help celebrate the amazing 10 year milestone for the Park and the unveiling of the memorial picnic setting that was gifted to Parks Victoria to commemorate the achievements and life of Doug Phillips.

The event began with a “Welcome to Country” followed by a “Smoking Ceremony” lead by Damien Bell (CEO of Gundtij Mirring Traditional owners Aboriginal corporation). He invited all present to file through the smoke as a cleansing, and then past the picnic setting to read the memorial to Doug. This simple act brought the focus of everyone to the dedication of the memorial of Doug.

Guest from the Wilderness Society, Gunditj Mirring, Parks Victoria, Hamilton Field Naturalist club, Tarragal Landcare and Portland Field Naturalist Club all spoke about the passion and hard work that was lead by Doug Philips and the Portland Field Naturalist Club to bring about the much needed legislative change to protect our beloved Park from future logging.
